Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 500 years ago a sinner was born:

A sinner who grew up to be one of the most influential people in the Western church and the whole Western world,
A sinner who has been slanderously villainized in the years since his death for his love of God’s freedom,
A sinner who has been justly villainized for his role in the execution of Michael Servetus,
A sinner who bled sola scriptura, preaching an average of 5 unique exegetical, non-topical sermons a week,
A sinner who we either love to love, wearing his name like a badge, or love to hate, treating his name like a four letter word,
A sinner in the hands of a sovereign God,
who championed God’s effectual grace to save wretches like himself.

A sinner who gave us a glorious, consuming, life changing, eye opening, sin mortifying, heart renewing, freeing, preserving vision of a Jesus who commands what he wills and wills what he commands.

A sinner who we remember only for the person he pointed us to.

John [Calvin] was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. Let that be who we remember on this 500th anniversary of Calvin’s birth.

Wilson/Horton Conversation

This is a good conversation between Douglas Wilson and Michael Horton in helping to understand some of the differences and similarities between the Federal Vision and its critics within Presbyterianism.

Also, I was looking around Douglas Wilson’s book log, where he basically states the title of a book, the author, and an adjective or two describing his opinion of the book, and thought his comments on some of NT Wright’s books were funny. For most of the books on his book log he just has one adjective, but apparently Wright’s books needed two. Here’s what he had to say:

Good Theology Saves No One

It is a great danger of mine to get too involved in learning about God to the neglect of increasing my affection for God — at least in this season; I think there have been times in my life when it’s been different. Theology is dangerous in the hands of a cold heart. It puffs up with pride; it becomes a weapon against others; it gives a false sense of security; it produces no sanctification; and it cannot justify. God hates the one who knows much about him but does not love him.

Reading Leviticus is Gain

I had originally titled this post Getting Through Leviticus, until I glanced at the post below it and felt ashamed that I would even call reading Leviticus “getting through it.” If dying can be gain, then reading Leviticus can be gain.

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Last Wednesday, John Piper shared some advice on listening to an audio version of Leviticus as an aid to reading it. But I’m reading through Leviticus right now, and I still have a hard time figuring out how the Levitical law is going to be helpful for me.

So here’s another tip that I think has been helping me. Ligon Duncan preached through Leviticus back in ’04-’05, and you can read through his commentary on the First Pres website. In addition, there’s audio versions of the sermons available to get you through chapters 3-7 (and audio for almost all of Numbers!). Since these made up the bulk of the Wednesday night sermons for 2005, Dr. Duncan worked a lot more into them than just commentary on how the priests were supposed to obey the law. He brings out a lot of what we can learn from this today, and so in that way it’s been helpful for me.

I did check a few other places (thinking at least MacArthur might have some reasources on Leviticus) and it just seems not that many people are into preaching through Leviticus. Now if I could just find a way to get through 1 Chronicles!
