Bearing Christ’s Afflictions for the Sake of the Church

Dr. Frank James III tells the story of the martyrdom of a slave girl who, in her death, became a great witness to the cross of Christ.

I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church (Colossians 1:24).

I really appreciate your website–it’s a breath of fresh air in our self-centered world.

Can you give me more information about where the Frank James III story about the slave girl came from? Do you have a reference that I could use? Do you know if this story is published in some ancient literature?

I have been studying the sovereignty of God for only a few years so I am still trying to piece it all together and to further strengthen my faith (as Piper says–become a dolphin rather than a jellyfish). This video was striking to me because of the enormous amount of faith they must have had to withstand the extreme persecution. I have been reading about the “prosperity gospel” that John Piper is so against and I would really like to know how those who teach the “prosperity gospel” would explain why people died in this manner (they would claim too little faith would be my guess–for if they had enough faith, they would lead an “abundant life”).

    Thank you!

Hey, Adam! The audio clip came from Dr. James’ History of Christianity I class at RTS (the second lecture on persecution).

The exact quote can be found in J. Robert Wright’s Readings for the Daily Office from the Early Church and is taken from Eusebius’ Church History (Book V, Chapter 1, see sections 17-19, 37, 41-42, 53-56).

Also, check out this corrective tract for the prosperity gospel (which happens to be based on the same painting as used in the video above). I think you’re spot on in your thoughts concerning that. I am excited to hear about the Spirit’s work in your life!

    Peace of Christ,
    Nathan
